Volunteer

Show up for a shift on campus.

Volunteers keep three places running at House of Refuge — the Community Center, the Donation Center, and the Employment & Education Center. Pick the one that fits your hours and your hands.

Volunteer roles

Six ways to show up.

Concrete shifts, real tasks. Pick what fits — orientation comes after you tell us which one.

2–3 hours, weekday afternoons

Community Center Shift

Help run after-school programming for kids on campus — homework help, snacks, structured activities, and full-day programming during school breaks.

2–4 hours, Mon–Sat

Donation Center Shift

Sort incoming furniture, clothing, and household goods, stock shelves, and help resident families and qualifying neighbors find what they need.

1–2 hours per session

Employment & Education Tutor or Coach

Sit one-on-one with adult heads of household on résumés, interview prep, financial literacy, or basic computer skills.

Flexible, by request

Ambassadors

Lead campus tours for prospective donors and community groups, or speak about House of Refuge at churches, civic clubs, and workplaces.

Second Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

Outreach Group

Meet monthly with other community-minded neighbors to plan and staff fundraisers, drives, and family-facing events.

Half or full day, scheduled

Corporate Group Days

Bring your team for a day of painting, landscaping, pantry stocking, or campus projects. We'll line up the work — you bring the people.

Volunteers keep the Donation Center stocked, run after-school activities, coach résumés, and host community dinners.

The work is hands-on and steady. You'll sort donations alongside staff, sit with a parent working through an online job application, or set out snacks before kids walk in from the school bus. No scripts, no sales pitch — just the day-to-day rhythm of a 30-year-old neighborhood that runs on people showing up.

What volunteers actually do

Concrete tasks, not abstract impact.

How to start

Four steps from interested to on a shift.

Step 01

Email us

Send a note to volunteer@houseofrefuge.org with your name and the role you're interested in.

Step 02

Read the orientation packet

We'll send a short packet covering campus expectations, dress, and what to bring on your first day.

Step 03

Visit the campus

Schedule a brief orientation visit at 6935 E. Williams Field Rd. so you can see the place and meet the staff lead for your role.

Step 04

Show up for your first shift

That's it. No application portal, no waitlist — just a confirmed time and a person expecting you.

Email volunteer@houseofrefuge.org.

We'll get you on a shift this month. Or stop by the Donation Center at 6858 E. Ursula Ave. — Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
